Yeah so…I wound up waking up early as hell on Saturday morning to give somebody a ride to work. Didn’t really feel like blasting any rap music that early, so I just turned the radio on. The weekend version of the Tom Joyner Morning Show was on and they played this song.
At first I thought it was two women singing, for a minute I thought it was reworked Floetry because I recognized Marsha’s voice. But when the song went off they said “new artist from the UK named Daley featuring Marsha Ambrosius…sounds like she has a new Floetry partner with this one, that girl can sing.”
So, when I got home I looked up the song…this video popped up. And yeah, was very surprised to see a white dude singing. Not “surprised” as in let down or looking at him a certain way, but just because, shit, he sound like a girl and Tom Joyner pretty much assumed it was a girl too.
Kind of reminds me of the story my dad always tells me about the first time he saw Earth, Wind and Fire live. He says that they recorded their live album Gratitude in Pittsburgh and he went to go see the show. I guess up to this point, nobody really saw Earth, Wind and Fire perform, they just knew them from the radio and the album covers. Alot of people’s favorite songs were “Reasons” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone.”
But, I guess most cats on the block assumed that was the woman from the Head To The Sky cover singing a guest appearance. So imagine the shock they felt when they saw Phillip Bailey grab the microphone and started singing those songs. I’ll let you imagine some of the commentary my dad said he heard when that happened.
But yeah, I’m not here calling Daley the “next Phillip Bailey” or nothing like that. Just sharing.
I hear that his album Those Who Wait is pretty cool too. I’m checking it out later tonight. If you weren’t (900k + youtube views) late like I was, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section.
